A good quality product November 7, 2008 This brand is great. It lasts all day and I think that I bought it for a good price.
Smudge-Prone. Bad Applicator. Good Color & Consistency. July 7, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
For years I used Estee Lauder's liquid eye liner, but when Estee Lauder reformulated its liquid liners to be metallic, I started looking for a replacement. I looked at no fewer than 30 brands of liquid eye liner and found that nearly all liners with a brush applicator are now metallic. Non-metallic liquid liners all have felt tip applicators. I found only one exception to this baffling tradition: a brand called Lola that is difficult to obtain. This left me with no choice but to try a felt tip liner, so I bought Clinique's Eye Defining Liquid Liner in Dark Brown, thinking that it might be close to the old Estee Lauder formulation, since it is the same parent company.
The Dark Brown color is, indeed, the same color as Estee Lauder's old Dark Brown. But this felt tip applicator is a poor substitute for a natural brush. If you would like a wide line, you might like the tapered felt tip. The tapering allows you to adjust the width of the line by varying pressure on the tip. But the felt tip is fussy to use, especially if you are trying to get a fine line. The problem is that the felt is never completely smooth. It always has small frays and imperfections. This means that the liner never goes on entirely smoothly. I always have to touch up with a Q-tip. One-stroke application is out of the question. I assume so many cosmetic companies have gone to felt tips simply because they are cheap to produce -to the detriment of their products. Natural brush applicators last for years, like any make-up brush, while felt tips have a short, problematic lifespan.
As for the formula, itself, Clinique claims that its Eye Defining Liquid Liner is water-resistant. But this liner smudges more easily than any liquid liner I've used and just as easily as pencil eye liner. I have to touch it up constantly. The consistency and color are good, but it could have a lot more staying power. And, for those of us who want a fine line, a brush applicator is far superior.
