Beautiful, fun colors! July 1, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I received this item today (ordered from Sephora's website). It's lovely! When closed, it's about 1-1/4" thick by roughly 4"x4", but once you open it... there's a mirror and 12 eyeshadows. Move the eyeshadows to the side, and you'll see your lipglosses, mascara and applicators (which I will get to in a bit). Move the eyeshadows a little more and your blushes and powders will appear.
The eyshadow colors are just amazing and I think they just might be universally flattering. On the right side, there's a goldish-tinted olive green, a very soft and shimmery leaf green, a dark plum with gold flecks, a shimmery lilac, a soft matte pink, and a white with pink shimmer. On the left side, a warm golden brown, then a sort of toffee-peach brown, a very light and shimmery nude, a pinkish bronze, a very metallic bronze, and finally, a dark coffee with some shimmer. The first thing I did was try the leaf green because I never have any luck with green eyeshadows staying true to their color on my skin. This one did, and I was extremely pleased. You can tell that they are Sephora quality-- a good thing. You also get a mini Sephora mascara.
The next thing I tried was the light pink blush on the bottom right. I've never used blush before. I wasn't a fan of the itchy, scratchy, cheap blush brush, so I applied it with my fingers for the most part. It's a cute pastel pink! I'm excited about trying the rest of the blushes, although I'm a little bit scared of the brightness of the top-right pink.
I'm not quite sure about the face powders... The one on the left seems like it could be for tanner skin, or maybe a bronzer for lighter skintones like mine. I tried it on my nose and it seems like it could be used for both. The one on the right I'm not too sure of because it's almost white, but blends very well.
I looooove the lip glosses. They're all very sheer but you can definitely mix them and build up the color. They seem like they'd go extremely well combination-wise with any of the blushes or eyeshadows.
Now on to the applicators... the reason why I only gave this four stars instead of the five. Now, thank goodness I didn't go "Oh, mini applicators, how convenient!" when I bought it. My least favorite is the blush brush, which I previously regarded as itchy, scratchy and cheap. It is. I've never used blush before or owned a real blush brush, so I didn't quite know what to expect, but I thought perhaps Sephora would include something that didn't resemble a child's pretend toy brush. The black plastic bristles kept falling out even when I was just examining it! When I tried it out on my cheeks with the blush, the bristles caused my skin to become extremely irritated and splotchy. I think I will throw it out and invest in a real brush. The lip brush is alright... a little stiff at first, but once you rub the brush between your fingers and break up whatever is holding it together, it becomes soft and easy to use, and allows you to brush sheer layers of the gloss on your lips. It's probably not the best quality either, but it was the kind of okay quality I was expecting (unlike the blush brush). Finally, the foam eyeshadow applicators are exactly like any foam applicators you can get anywhere, but I'm glad they're double-ended and included with the kit, although I prefer eyeshadow brushes to foam applicators.
In all it's a beautiful kit with lots of great-quality colors! Definitely worth the $30 from Sephora, but you might have to buy or use your own brushes.
A treasure trove of makeup fun! May 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is simply a fantastic makeup palette! From the super wearable colors, to the great compact design. The amounts of each powder is surprising large, (read long lasting!). At only $30 dollars, it's a wonderful investment, especially if you want to try some new colors, or just like having a quick, handy, all inclusive selection of colors at your fingertips. I love that it has it's own little applicators, which is great for traveling with. (Though, honestly, at home I prefer to use my own larger ones.)
