Product Description Guerlain's most successful and enduring fragrance was created by Jacques Guerlain at a time when fascination with the Orient was sweeping Europe. Inspired by the love of an Indian Emperor for his magnificent wife, Mumtaz-Mahal - for whom the Taj Mahal was built - Shalimar is named after "The Gardens of Shalimar," where their love grew.A deliciously fresh flight becomes hazy and sensual when the vanilla and powdery notes of its sweet, sensual base are discovered.

Know how to wear it October 23, 2008 I disagree with the people who called this "floor cleaner" smell. In Fact, ignore that type of a comment on any scent. First off, it probably does not mix with your personal scent very well--hence it comes off smelling offensive to you. Cologenes and Perfumes mix with your own personal scent to "create" another scent. Go on-line and learn about the different families of scents and how to find the family that works with your body. I cannot wear anything that has a totally flowery or fruity scent to it due to my personal scent chemistry. And I find that 90% of the new-modern cologenes to smell very "Chemical" and lack character on me. On another women--they would be just fine. And while I would not expect a young women to like this scent, I have been wearing it since I was 16--I'm 55. The only other scents I wear are Royal Secret or Caborchard. Both are in the same "family scent" as Shalimar---Woodsy/Oriental/deep/musky. And I do wear all three during the day as well as night. I have no problems getting compliments from men and women when I wear them. Do not wear a scent simply because every else is raving about it. You need to find the "family" of scents that work with your personal chemistry and not because it smells nice on someone else or is the "hottest" scent on the market. If you pick a scent that way, you will be disappointed. Ask for trial samples at the stores. You can even purchase trial samples on line. Never buy a whole bottle till you know how your body chemistry will react. Shalimar is one of the oldest and orginal cologenes on the market. The fact that it has lasted since the 1930's shows just what a great scent it is---on the right body.
SMELLS OFFENSIVE June 4, 2006 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
YUCK! I got this because everyone raves about it.. not just these reviews but EVERYONE. Tried wearing it during autumn, yuck. Tried it in the winter, yuck. Tried it at NIGHT, yuck. Seems to stink me up. I tried to hurry up and finished the bottle as fast as possible. I even tried to like it it whil waiting to run up the bottle. Now that I'm finally free of this overrated stuff I am glad to make room for things that smell good. Has a nostalgic aura about it (like Jicky, L'heure blue) which is why I'm thinking all these people rave about it. Smells powdery and I can see how someone could describe the smell as "floor cleaner".
there is nothing like Shalimar May 1, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have loved Shalimar since I found an empty Shalimar bottle my dad had given my mom when they first married. It definitely is not for everyone, but try it! I think it smells different on everyone. On me, it it smokey, spicey and complex. it reminds me of a jazz club!
SMELLS FANTASTIC September 22, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Views are differing on this scent. One reviewer here says it smells like "floor cleaner" on her. Others find it powdery. I am somewhere in the middle, and will admit to smearing just a touch of this on my neck because I like it so much. It's a Night Fragrance, for sure. A VERY light spray is recommended - a little Shalimar goes a LONG way, and a small bottle lasts me almost a year. Distintive. Very sophisticated. Shalimar is not for everyone, surely. Do yourself a favor, try a little of this in a department store first. If you like it, buy it. And you might like to find "Jicky", also by Guerlain. It is the fragrance Shalimar was based on.
Too strong for my taste May 23, 2005 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I disagree with the reviewer who said that this was not strong at all and wouldn't effect people with perfume allergies. I have always found Shalimar offensive in my opinion; to me, it smells like floor cleaner. I am a 23 year old woman who tends towards light, watery floral fragrances. On the plus side, my grandmother loved it, and it does remind me a little of her. I have also heard that it smells light on certain people, and this may be true. But I do know it smells terrible on me.
