Excellent product September 26, 2008 I received my 4 piece shaving set today. Tore open the box and was very satisfied with everything. I even got a Col. Conk Bay Rum Shaving Soap that I wasn't expecting!(about 4 bucks on amazon) However, I also got a glass shaving bowl, which, while aesthitically pleasing and stamped with the merkur logo and brand name, seemed less durable than the as stated "matching shaving bowl". A bowl I thought would be bigger and made of satin finished stainless steel. You know, like in the picture. I will be contacting MenEssentials about this only because this isn't your run of the mill shaving set and I'm not sure the glass bowl justifies the price I paid. Were it not for this gripe I would rate this product 5 stars.
The Razor Smaller than I expected but also pleasantly weighted. Has an adjustable handle which is the reason I purchased this sleek looking device. GIVE ME OPTIONS! YES! Satin finished stainless steel.
The Brush Has some weight to it. Very nice. The bristles are plentiful and soft. Sorry badgers. Satin finished stainless steel.
The Stand
Seems capable of holding the dual weight of the razor and brush without tipping over. Indeeed it has done so for at least 5 hours and hasn't tipped over. Success! (I had my doubts I admit) Satin finished stainless steel.
The Bowl
Frosted Glass. Merkur logo and brand name in clear glass. (Reminiscent of Versace's medusa, which might be the only reason I don't send it back. I like stylized heads I guess.) Has some kind of rubber or other synthetic material affixed to the bottom, presumably to keep it from sliding around. Thoughtful, but I'm thinking it won't last nearly as long as the razor. Probably irrelevant since I want to use Truefitt & Hill shaving soap (purchased only because I didn't know I would be getting soap with my shaving set) and it clearly won't fit. Which means I would have to shop for a shaving bowl. argh
I should also mention that MenEssentials shipped this right away and I got it soon after I ordered it. I expect little hassle regarding the shaving bowl.
Love it. April 7, 2008 After paying 10 bucks for only 4 Schick blades - I forced myself to try a proper safety razor and decided to get this product. It's a bit expensive and should be a little cheaper but so worth it. Makes shaving fun and I am really able to get a much much closer shave. Now, do be warned that the blades are sharp as heck and even scary for novice users - once you get the hang of it you will love it. In the end I am saving a lot of money since the blades for the Merkur Futur (or any safety razor) are so much cheaper and able to be used far longer. Pair it up w/ a nice shaving cream and you're good to go.
Excellent, but flawed October 19, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
First, the excellent: The Futur razor itself is among the best available. It's nicely weighted and finished, and looks to be a lifetime investment. Shaving with it is a pleasure; it's well designed and manufactured, and is satisfying in every way. The adjustment works well, and all in all, I heartily recommend it. The badger brush is quite nice, and it's a plus to have it match the (satin in my case) finish of the razor, if you are into matched sets and such. I didn't go for the polished partly because I thought they might be slippery... Anyway, the bristles are high quality and aesthetically pleasing, although the value may not be exceptional. The bowl is quite thin and unremarkable. You may view this as pleasing minimalist design, or simply as cheap stamped metal; eye of the beholder. I like it, as I tend to favor minimalist industrial design. The stand, however, is egregious. It's cheap, light, poorly designed, made of pot metal, and in my case at least, terribly finished. There are glaring obvious casting marks (flash lines) on the surface. All in all, it looks to me like the razor was designed first, by a team that cared about quality. Then the brush was created to match. That necessitated a bowl, and what the heck, make a stand, too. Somewhere in there, marketing folks got involved, and I ended up buying something that failed to justify its steep purchase price. Verdict: Buy the razor. If you must have a matching brush, well, buy the brush, too. The bowl is unremarkable, but functional and perhaps worthy (although whether available outside of the 4-piece set, I do not know) but do _not_ buy the 4-piece set, because you will be guaranteed of paying more than you ought for a great razor, good brush, matching bowl (that cost maximum fifty cents to produce) and a stand that is totally unworthy of holding quality items. Were it not for the poor finish quality, the stand would be merely objectionable. However, my particular example of the stand is downright insulting. YMMV. I am currently engaged in an attempt to get the seller to send me a replacement stand, which will at best be objectionable. I'll also be shopping for a better stand, and likely a bowl as well.
Back to the basics April 6, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
My background:
I used a Gillette Sensor. It was okay. I upgraded to Sensor XL. It was pretty good. I tried a Mach 3, and I hated it -- it felt like I was wiping my face with a wall of blades. I finally settled on Sensor 3 -- at nearly 2 bucks a blade. It got the job done, but there was no real joy in shaving. Considering I have to do it at least once a day (twice if I'm going out at night) the process should be more enjoyable.
After quite a bit of research, including newsgroups and customer reviews, I splurged and got the Merkur Futur (though I got the chrome finish).
Shaving is awesome, and I literally look forward to it. Lathering up the shave cream (I use Crabtree and Evelyn Sandlewood) with this brush is a real treat. Super soft, holds a ton of water, and results in a thick lather. (Be warned, the first few times you use it, it stinks like wet badger... but it goes away).
The razor itself is heavy... I mean heavy. Which is good, because you need to let the razor do the work -- NO PRESSURE, OR YOU WILL TAKE OFF YOU FACE). The main difference between this razor and shaving with cartridges, is that you actually feel the blade against your face (as opposed to a chunk of plastic). Anyone who has had a shave with a barber knows how great this feels.
Once I got the technique down it is as close and smooth a shave as I have ever had. Finishing up with a cold water splash, non-alcoholic toner / aftershave, and a moisturizing lotion, is an invigorating way to start the day.
Please note: as stated above the brush smells a little "badgery" at first, but it goes away. The head of the razor does not pivot, so you have to follow the contours of your face. And the head itself it bulky, so you have to work on your technique around your nose, and under you chin.
In sum, this razor adds an old-school, refreshing routine to my mornings. I love it, and would whole-heartedly recommend it.
Smooth shaving March 6, 2007 Have had this for about 2 years now, switched from the run of the mill razors to this and have never been happier, The bush holds up great and the razor is heavy and makes it feel as if you ae using a solid piece of equipment, which you are, very little maintainence on the razor, change the blades and rinse when changing. Will not go back to disposable type again.
