Smells great even when not burning December 26, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These candles have a strong and wonderful smell. Mine has lasted well beyond what other brands of candles last and still makes my home smell sensual and welcoming.
Very Nice. December 20, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Candles produced a pleasant, not overwhelming aroma. I kept the wicks short and this prevented the soot problem previously mentioned (but this is common sense with any candle).
For this particular style of Archipelago Botanicals Candles, Amazon should do its customers a favor and describe the scents in the various candles offered. I had to go to another website to find out what candle scents went with what type. The Amazon main page says "Fragrance Notes: Orange, Cinnamin (sic) and Spice," but this applies (I think) to "Joy", not to the many other scents offered.
Clip Da Wick November 25, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
It was noted in an earlier review below that these candles emit a large amount of black soot. ANY candle (or oil lamp) will do this if the wick is longer than about 1/4 of an inch. I lit my Glass Jar candle after trimming the new wick to that length and found that it still smoked with a long flame. Blew it out and trimmed it to about 1/8-inch and the issue disappeared.
Trim the wick short; this fixes the issue.
These candles are exceptional.
mMmm.. archipelago candles October 5, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
i love these candles....
altho this particular collection looks a little different from what i've originally purchased (from what i can tell, only the presentation... mine came in a basic glass container), archipelago candles in general make the best candles i've ever bought!
they're very fragrant and a single candle (altho i've only purchased the larger ones, since they're more bang for your buck) can fill up an entire room (and this old house has high ceilings!). another pleasant attribute is that they have long life spans. some candles don't burn well, but these can burn for a few hours without literally melting to nothing. of course, you don't want to leave them on all day, but they're perfect for a romantic evening (for which i think pomegranite citrus is amazing), parties (yay, pineapple ginger), or even a pick-me-up while cleaning house (pink grapefruit- my fave!).
i was a little concerned with what one person wrote about the smoke that ruined his evening, but the worst i've ever had like that from these is just a little black emission when first lit... after that, it's been nothing but delicious! besides, from what i've read, most soy candles don't usually give off much of a toxic anything, anyway.
(but i recommend, if anything like his situation occurs, to, obviously, extinguish the candle, and return it to the place of purchase.)
oh, and my reason for giving these candles for 4 stars is that, as you can see, they're a little pricey (and it's literally like burning money, no? hehe). but, you get what you pay for!!

Word of Warning -- these candles are a health hazard June 6, 2006 8 out of 15 found this review helpful
Archipelago's candles smell nice, but burn with a black, charred smoke that is harmful. Simply put, these candles present a serious health hazard and should be avoided at all costs. After lighting this candle for a romantic evening with my girlfriend we found (only a few hours later) that we'd inhaled tons of this black smoke deep into our lungs. Our nostrils were covered in black soot. When we blew our nose that's what came out (sorry for the being descriptive about this) -- black, tar-like substance. For the next few days we both suffered from shortness of breath and a terrible cough, clearly signs of smoke inhalation and poisoning. Please avoid Archipelago's candles - they were detrimental to my health and my loved one's, and I hope that this small review might spare others from the experience.
