4 out of 5 stars Facial Toner   May 16, 2007

Clinique's facial toner works better than some other competitive brands that I have used. It seems to keep my pores clean and my skin tone more even.

This is the only salicylic acid product that doesn't break out or irritate my skin! It keeps my face clear of breakouts and has become a miracle for my large pores and blackheads. I've been using this in the 3-step system for a month and I notice an incredible change in the clearness and look of my skin. This is a step I cannot skip. Cheap toners make my face feel dry and tight but this is refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars This is great stuff   August 25, 2005

First of all, I don't have sensitive skin. I have oily to combination skin and am slightly fair to medium complexion. I started using Clinique skin care in high school when my skin started going crazy and breaking out constantly. This stuff saved my complexion. I used Claifying lotion #3 into my twenties, changing to #2 and now I use the mild version in my early 40's. Clinique skin care kept me practically blemish free during my teen years and I started both my kids on it when they hit middle school. Despite having 2 parents with oily breakout prone skin, both my kids have great complexions. They use the entire line of Clinique products and it has kept their complexions clear. Clinique skin care and a good sunscreen are the basics of a great complexion.

1 out of 5 stars Made my skin dry and flaky--break out in other areas   July 28, 2005

I purchased the entire 3-Step Clinique system including:
Clinique Facial Soap with dish
Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2
Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion

About the same time I started using the Clinique 3-step system, I began wearing foundation for the first time. I found that my skin started breaking out and began to be dry in some spots. I stopped using the foundation after about 3 months because I thought that was the issue. However, my skin problems did not improve and I even moved down a level in the Clinique system to one for more sensitive skin.

However, after about 7 months of daily use, my skin was not improving and I found a review of the Clinique 3-step System from Paula Begoun. Her research indicates that all of Clinique's facial soaps in the 3-Step System are too irritating for all skin types. Her research also stated that all Clarifying Lotions (1-4) contain alcohol and Clarifying Lotion 2 contains menthol which make them too irritating for all skin types.

I never thought that my skin care products were the cause of my flaky skin and break outs. Apparently, the products dried out my skin making it flaky in some areas and in response, my skin started producing more oil to compensate for the dryness-which made me break out in other areas. I switched to Paula's Choice facial products and I occasionally use Cetaphil. After I made the switch, my skin slowly began recovering.

Unfortunately, now I have some acne scars on my cheeks as a result of using the Clinique 3-step system. It makes me sad because before, my skin was healthy and for the most part clear. I do want to be fair to Clinique. They have some great products---I use their City Block Sheer SPF 15, Advanced Stop Signs Eye SPF 15 and I wear Clinique Happy perfume which smells amazing.

I hope this review proves helpful to other women so you don't have to go through what I went through! Clinique does have some great products in their line, but they do need to reformulate their 3-Step Skin Care System.

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Techniques to Get the Most Out of Clarifying Lotion   March 28, 2005

Flakiness be banished! More than just a toner, which only gives a refreshed feeling to the face, Clarifying Lotion provides a mild amount of exfoliation to the skin. Used twice a day after cleansing and before moisturizer, C.L. gently removes the old, dead, top layer of face skin that our body discards each day and helps reveal the fresher, newer skin underneath. As a bonus, C.L. also removes the dull, dead flakes that don't stand up on their own but make the skin look dull and lifeless. When this dull layer is removed, moisturizer (or any other face treatment product) applied afterward is better able to penetrate the skin and its effectiveness is increased. Liquid foundation applied afterwards will not grab as much on the dull, flakey parts and make you look cakey but will glide on more smoothly. I find I need even less foundation because my dead flakes aren't sucking it all up! Complexion is more radiant, skin has a soft, healthy glow.

Use Clarifying Lotion twice daily after cleansing and before moisturizer. Place on a 100% cotton ball or pad (100% cotton is less abrasive than synthetics) and sweep one time over the skin covering each part of the face and neck once but avoiding the immediate eye and lip areas. No need to scrub back and forth with your cotton ball; let the Clarifying lotion do all the work. Clarifying Lotions 2-4 will all provide a strong tingle to the face when applied. This is normal and is the effect of the skin being exfoliated. With regular, twice a day use, the sensation diminishes as the skin gets used to the feeling.

Clarifying Lotion comes in two sizes, 6.7 oz & 13.5 oz, and four main types plus one specialty type:

Clarifying Lotion 2 is Clinique's most popular Clarifying Lotion. It is recommended for Skin Type I (dry skin), Skin Type II (normal/combination skin), and some Skin Type III's (oily T-zone with normal cheeks) who experience burning when first exposed to the sun (an indicator of skin strength).

Clarifying Lotion 3 provides an increased level of exfoliation from CL2 and is recommended for Skin Type III (oily T-zone with normal cheeks) whose skin tans more easily (an indicator of skin strength) and Skin Type IV (oily T-zone and cheeks/oily all over) whose skin tends to burn easily in the sun. This Clarifying Lotion is also recommended for long time users of Clarifying Lotion 2 who would like to receive increased results from the increased exfoliation provided and whose skin has been significantly strengthened through long term use of CL2. Upgrading will increase all the positive results of smoother, softer, more healthy looking skin. CL2 users can gently ease into CL3 use by alternating CL2 and CL3 day and night till they finish a whole bottle this way. Users doing so will once again experience the strong tingle of their first use as the skin acclimates to the increased exfoliation.

Clarifying Lotion 4 provides the highest level of exfoliation and is only for Skin Type IV (oily T-zone and cheeks/oily all over) whose skin does not burn easily in the sun (an indicator of skin strength) and for long time users of Clarifying Lotion 3 who would like to receive increased results from the increased exfoliation provided and whose skin has been significantly strengthened through long term use of CL3. Upgrading will increase all the positive results of smoother, softer, more healthy looking skin. CL3 users can gently ease into CL4 use by alternating CL3 and CL4 day and night till they finish a whole bottle this way. Users doing so will once again experience the strong tingle of their first use as the skin acclimates to the increased exfoliation.

Clarifying Lotion 1 is closest to a traditional toner as it doesn't not provide any exfoliation. It is recommended only for those individuals who have been advised by a doctor not to exfoliate their skin at all (this is a rare instance.) Woman with normal skin types might choose to use Clarifying Lotion 1 on days they are suffering from a sunburn or on the same day they've visited the dermatologist and had a treatment such as dermabrasion or an acid peel. For most women and most skin types, skip this one as it is not for daily use.

Clarifying Lotion Mild is a specialty Clarifying Lotion for users who have a recommendation from a dermatologist not to use alcohol on the face, or need an especially lower level of exfoliation, or who have had trouble in the past using Clarifying Lotion 2. It is used and applied the same way as the other four but has a more viscous feel. It is considered `buffered' exfoliation.

All of Clinique's Clarifying Lotions are wonderful products and I have used nearly all of them over the span of many years. I started out on Clarifying Lotion 2 and then using the methods described above, very slooooowly upgraded myself to 3 and then very, very slooooowly on to 4. I have great skin (I'm always being told) but it's only great because I'm consistent with this product. Sometimes all those compliments would go to my head and I'd stop using Clarifying Lotion because I thought I `didn't need it.' Each time I stopped I was quickly reminded how much of a difference it made when I noticed my skin looked dull and didn't look as `glowey' and flakiness cropped up everywhere. All those compliments stopped rolling in. Now, I've never been without it for long and always keep an extra bottle under the sink.
